When the Dot NET generic Top-Level Domain was first introduced in 1985, along with the first domains on the Internet, it was planned to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure firms. As there were no special rules about the usage of the TLD, though, .NET domains were purchased and used for diverse purposes and by a lot of people.
